Dollar bill 'raffle' on delayed airplane flights: anyone played it

Dollar bill 'raffle' on delayed airplane flights: anyone played it?
I asked this here almost a year ago, but no one had heard of this "game". So I'll try again! :) A few years ago, I was on an American Airlines flight from San Jose to Las Vegas, and we had to wait "on the tarmac" about an hour before we could take off. To help pass the time, the flight attendants said we were going to play a game. Everyone who wished to participate took out a $1 bill. We each wrote our seat number on our bill. An attendant collected all the bills in a bag, then had a child pull one bill from the bag. The person whose seat number was written on that bill won ALL the bills! :) Ever since, I've asked quite a few people (who fly more often than I do) about this dollar bill "raffle", but NO one has ever played this on a delayed flight, or any flight for that matter! I wonder if it's unique to American Airlines, or perhaps it's unique to flights going to Vegas? Anyhoo, I'm curious if anyone here on Yahoo has heard of this game, and/or played it? Sylverbutterfli -- I know it's not a game of skill, which is why I called it a "raffle". And I *do* like your idea of calling it a "lottery". But please, let's not mince words. :) I called it a "game" just as a generic term. Splitting hairs regarding my word choice is not exactly a helpful answer to my question. (I'm not angry, hence my use of the smiley above. I'm just amused at your non-answer).

ive never heard of it but it doesnt sound like much of a game. there is no skill invovled and theres no way to guarantee your chances of winning. its a lottery. edit: im amazing at the non-answer! (tks for noticing:D) but to answering your question DIRECTLY: no, ive never herd of it, or played it, or ever heard anyone else mention it. ive been flying quite a lot recently and i usually have conversation with the people around me, but none of them have ever mentioned. but ive also not been in a big delay. i think once we were like 6th for takeoff, but we were still gone in less than 15 minutes. and p.s. i dont like games of chance cuz im pretty damn skillful, in the right situation, lmao!

Never heard of it, sorry, but it sounds like an isolated incident. A good idea for a Vegas flight. Might be taken as kind of silly on other flights.

Costa Rica Travel Help

Costa Rica Travel Help?
We will be traveling to Costa Rica late December to January this year and still need to book our hotels. We were wondering is it better to take a flight from San Jose to Liberia, Costa Rica to stay at the JW Marriott in Guanacaste for probably five days. We also would like to go to Arenal Volcano area for 4 days. We need some suggestions for hotels there as well. Any help with travel tips or hotels you enjoyed would be greatly appreciated! :) Do you know is there an airport in Tamarindo that we can fly into since it would be closer for JW Marriott.

If you are going to stay at the JW you should fly into Liberia, otherwise you are looking at a 5 hour car ride to get to your hotel from San Jose. Arenal has several great hotels. Tabacon Resort is the most popular, but I think a little over hyped. Check out Arenal Springs www.arenalspringshotel.com You might want to think again about your itinerary. Even if you fly to Liberia, you are going to spend 45 minutes driving to JW, then 3+ hours driving to Arenal, then 3+hours driving back to the airport. This could be an alternative including Manuel Antonio as your beach destination instead of JW. Fly to San Jose, then fly with Nature Air to from San Jose to Arenal (30 minutes), then fly from Arenal to Quepos (40 minutes) to enjoy Manuel Antonio (Quepos is 5 minutes from Manuel Antonio). Then fly back to San Jose (20 minutes). Manuel Antonio is a much nicer destination then Guanacaste, with lush jungle, tons of wildlife and better restaurants. And even though Manuel Antoni does not have a JW it comes pretty close with Arenas del Mar (www.arenasdelmar.com) I only give you the flying option because I have seen lots of tourists vacation ruined in CR because of the endless driving. Flying is really the way to go in CR. Here are some more links: www.skytrek.com www.spauno.com www.flysansa.com

Could someone give us recommendations of Costa Rican destinations within a few hours of San Jose

Could someone give us recommendations of Costa Rican destinations within a few hours of San Jose?
Our last night in Costa Rica we would like to stay closer to San Jose in order to catch our flight but don't want to stay in the city. Is Playa Hermosa within a few hours' drive? We don't think Jaco is for us (too touristy) but welcome any other recommendations that are safe and picturesque. We will be traveling back from the Nicoya peninsula, FYI. I'm sorry, I should have mentioned a couple of things: I have been to Costa Rica before and absolutely love it. I also am returning to Monteverde (that will be the first 1/2 of our trip). I was looking for something 2 hours max from the airport for our last night as we don't want to have to rush back that morning. I think Playa Hermosa seems to be the best bet- thanks for the help!

sure playa hermosa would work. also you can try this place: http://www.pozoazul.com/how_to_get_there.html, only 90 min. from San Jose. it has rafting, horseback riding, biking, hiking, canopy tours, repelling. its cool! have fun, and don't miss ur flight! also, you can just go to Puntarenas city. its nice there. when u come back to the city, stop at this place that is a milk factory called CoopeLeche, for an awesome chocolate milkshake!!! have fun. don't stop at this place that says "english books" "hamburgers" and"milkshakes" cus it sucks and the people talk forever.. have fun!!

The entire nation is within a few hours of San Jose. ;-) You can catch a bus and be anywhere within about 4 hours. Jaco actually has its own charm, and I went there about 4 times while I was in the country. By US standards, even that beach isn't crowded. For convenience of getting there and back for your flight, you really can't beat it. Coming back from Nicoya, you might consider swinging through Monteverde. It's a lot more remote, so its harder to get to - definitely ask your concierge for advice - but if you haven't seen it, you must before you leave the country. If you're not dead set against staying in the city, I would look into spending your last night in the western suburbs of the city. Look into the San Pedro area or Los Yoses - it's an upscale neighborhood with various embassies and the University, and is really a very pretty area. You don't really get the full Costa Rican flavor if you don't spend any time in the cities of the Central Valley. I'd recommend Hotel Le Bergerac - it's where I put my parents up when they came to visit me, and it's just adorable. Beautiful room, courteous staff who speak flawless English.

well ive been to san jose many times and from my experience.....i would say that the hot springs at Volcan Arenal called Tabacon was the best. Theres also a water park in guanacaste thats excelent for the dry season (december-may) then theres SanIsidro thats south from there, that like Tijuana, Mexico. In Limon i think there is a Four Season hotel, and its a beutiful place with coral reef and conopy tours.

My favorite search site for airfares is www.sidestep.com, but also make sure to check out Southwest Airlines since they don't normally show up on the SideStep search. Southwest is generally my airline of choice for short flights along the West Coast, since they tend to be the least expensive.
